AMA Winter Throws 2017



22nd AMA Winter Throwing Championships

Saturday September 30th — Monday October 2nd, 2017
Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre, Wollongong, NSW

The Kerryn McCann Athletics Track is located within the grounds of Beaton Park Leisure Centre, in Gwynneville Wollongong, approximately one hour's drive south of Sydney. The complex has a new eight lane IAAF certified synthetic athletics track, along with new facilities for all jumping and throwing events. (including hammer and discus cages), as well as a 500 seating capacity grandstand.

Individual Events: Hammer, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin and Weight Throw.

Demonstration Event - Weight for Distance.

(Demonstration Event: Weight for Distance is NOT an official event for the AMA Winter Throws Championships and no ribbons will be awarded for this event. It is based on the Highland Games event and involves throwing a weight implement (one size down from the usual one thrown in the Weight event) one -handed from a discus circle—usually with an action similar to the discus throw).

Throws Pentathlon (incorporating 2017 Oceania Throws Challenge)

Group Dinner

MONDAY 2nd OCTOBER, 9.00am:

Heavy Weight Pentathlon
56lb and 100lb Throws

Uniforms: Wearing of State uniform is encouraged but not compulsory.

Refunds: When cancellation is received prior to the stated closing date, entry fees are refundable but NOT the Administration Fee. After the closing date, no fees are refundable. The LOC has the prerogative to make exceptions on compassionate grounds (not injury).

Confirmation of Entries: Confirmation of accepted entries and the events entered will be provided to all entrants. A program of events will be supplied to all entrants.

  • For NSW and ACT athletes, Wollongong is a 1¼ hour drive from the Sydney GPO and a 2½ hour drive from the Canberra GPO.
  • For athletes from other states, Wollongong is a 1¼ hour drive or a 1½ hour train journey from Sydney Airport.


  • There is a wide variety of accommodation available in Wollongong. 
  • There are high-end hotels (Novotel Northbeach, Best Western City Sands) and Apartments 
  • (Adina, Quest) at approximately $250 per night per bedroom. 
  • However, there are also a large number of good quality hotels within reasonable distance of the track between $100 to $150 per night.
  • Backpacker accommodation is also available.


  • The easiest method of getting around Wollongong is by car. 
  • There is also a free Shuttle Bus service that travels throughout the Wollongong CBD and runs straight past Beaton Park Leisure Centre. The service runs every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on week-ends and public holidays.
