History

50 Years of NSW Masters Athletics

The history of the NSW Masters Athletics Association began with the inaugural meeting of the “Wirinun Veterans Amateur Athletic Club”, on April 20, 1971, called by the  Club’s  first Secretary Logan Irwin.

Following with the drafting of a Club constitution at a special General Meeting held on October 20, our group was granted affiliation with the Amateur Athletics Association of NSW as a specialist club, on November 18, 1971.  The 50 years since then has seen incredible change and development, highlights, and successes.

50 Years of Australian Masters Athletics

The early 1970s witnessed a spectacular growth in jogging for fitness throughout Australia, and the Western World. In Australia a small number of ‘older men’ (and even fewer ‘mature women’ competed with their local amateur athletics clubs. Within a few years some would go on to be major players in the creation of the Veterans Athletics movement within Australia.
